Little Shop of Horrors

Produced by University of Georgia

UGA's Spring Musical Production of Little Shop of Horrors served as Cody Russell's Thesis Qualifier production. Directed by Daniel Ellis, this production leaned into the camp and theatricality worthy of a Costumed-Drag persona incarnation of Audrey II.

Design Statement

I was so excited to be given the opportunity to design the scenery for UGA Theatre’s production of Little Shop of Horrors. How often does theatre include magical malevolent plants and a musical sadistic dentist? Through the scenic elements, I wanted to illustrate the derelict state of skid row, and the desperation of its inhabitants. Seymore’s sincere affinity for botany grows and grows as he is able to overcome his hardships; but Mushniks Skidrow Flower Shop is a victim of its own success. What happens when a flower shop allows itself to forget its love for flowers? Watch as the humble florists become too chic for their own good as an invasive species takes root and pushes out the rest of the greenery. The fantastical, albeit macabre, moments of the play were a joy to design, and I wanted to emphasize the camp, theatricality, and magic of this crazy story.
